It’s that time of year again! New collections are among us! It wasn’t long ago that the Autumn/Winter Couture shows took place and we were eagerly waiting to see what our favorite designers had in store.

This years couture was a big success, with collections by Valentino, Donatella Versace and Chanel gaining high approval and hosting a selection of stunning front row celebrities. Let’s take a look at our favorites from the couture shows while we prepare for the inevitable masterpieces that will be unveiled in New York, Paris, Milan and London.

Versace: Donatella’s A/W collection definitely didn’t disappoint and the renowned designer started with a stunning fur-lined runway, with black and white being the predominant colors through-out. Always known for her glamour and dazzling pieces, this collection focuses on specific touches, with heavy attention on silver detail and buckles.

Precision-cut pieces, like the jackets and dresses, particularly the draped dresses all oozed sophisticated were all elegant and specific, but details such as thigh-high splits and low necklines created an instant feeling of allure. A 50’s theme is also noticeable when we look at the long skirts and sheer ladder additions to the garments. The look that hasn’t been around for a while is also making an appearance: long skirts over trousers. The pieces are fierce but still very sophisticated and feminine. If anyone can bring a modern twist to older trends, it’s Donatella Versace.

Christian Dior: This collection was definitely going to make our list of favorites. Delicate, luxurious and Eighteenth century inspired, these pieces absolutely ooze elegance and brought forward older ideas in a real, modern way. Raf Simons made it easy to focus on the details. Starting with the powerful ballgowns, the pannier-skirted dresses were paired with discreet jewelry and each set progressed, showcasing a completely different look. One had a more sporty feel to it, particularly the jumpsuits with their zipped details and delicate designs. The Eighteenth century inspiration is evident here. The coats such as mink and cashmere, stood out and the simple, minimalist styling made it easy to focus on the elaborate fabrics. Simons successfully brought back historical references, while making the pieces all relevant to today’s fashion.

Chanel: So, after Karl Lagerfeld’s success with his elaborate back drop and shopping set, everyone wanted to know what he would have in store us this season. This time, it was a simple theme and his background was a plain white room with a fake fire and mirror, clearly drawing some inspiration from Eighteenth century pieces. He opted for embroidery, which was probably the biggest sign that the collection would be looking to a historical time period for inspiration, with sequins and crystals also adding a delightful amount of detail to the clothes.

Maison Martin Margiela: While many designers opt for bold prints and designs, this collection is always eagerly anticipated because each season Maison Martin Margiela brings vivacity to his pieces. This season there was a strong Eastern feel running throughout, and a focus on thigh-high splits and clashing prints. Of course, there’s a raw and unique feel to the collection and the bejeweled/net face masks made an appearance too. All of these things combined demonstrate exactly why the collection was a big success and stood out among the rest.

Valentino: Well done Valentino. The impeccable collection was undoubtedly a big success, as it brought back some of our fashion favourites with classics like gladiators, yoga dresses and tunics. Making sure to bring each item into modern times, lace, leather and bold accessories were used to decorate the clothing. Delicate weaves and patterns were used and Italian traditions were explored, such as the long, plunging dresses which were incredibly popular. This collection was soft yet powerful and an absolutely stunning collection. Successfully delving into an older era, Valentino refreshed these fashion favorites for us in an alluring, tasteful way.

Giambattista Valli’s collection was also one of our favorites this year. Focusing predominantly on the shirt, he opted for a fresh and original take on the collection, as the pieces oozed elegance and were feminine and extremely delicate pieces! It’s undeniable that the clothes were very sophisticated and defined, with perfectly combined bold prints on fitted dresses and shirts. This is a designer we are keen to see more of and we’re eagerly anticipating his next collection.
